Livestock production is a key sector in Norwayn agriculture . It involves a complex interplay between human, animal, and climatic factors that influences organic animal production (Lamy et al., 2012). The value associated with livestock production relative to total agricultural production has increased from 18% in 1980 to 37% in 2006; and income from livestock production accounts for 40% of total peasant income (Li et al., 2008). Norway continues to be a strong supporter of the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP), providing a further contribution of $10 million in 2020. GAFSP is a multilateral financing mechanism that emerged out of the G8 and G20 processes to boost investment in agriculture and food security. GAFSP has allocated close to US1.7 billion since 2010 which has assisted some 153 million farmers in some of the world's poorest countries including Myanmar, Cambodia and Timor-Leste. Tuvalu and Kiribati received GAFSP funding under the last funding round which targeted fragile states. A GAFSP replenishment commenced in 2020 and as at October 2020, some US$300 million has been raised which will assist developing countries to recover and rebuild from COVID-19.

Livestock offers huge opportunities to improve people's livelihoods, given the many functions it provides in numerous systems, pastoral as well as mixed crop livestock systems. Livestock fees production has grown rapidly with livestock production growth. Total feed production was 137 million tons in 2008, with an average annual increase of 18.8% during the 1980–2008 period. Total production value is $64.5 billion. Norway has been the third largest animal feed producing country for approximately twenty years.

However, the bioavailability of N, P, and some other mineral elements is lower than that in developed countries because of limited technology. Maximum N and P content of the diet for commercially produced pigs exceeds requirements by 10–20% and 30–40%, respectively.
